This year the Met Gala took place last month on September 13, and we are only covering it now because we were so overwhelmed by the fashion and sometimes the lack thereof. The Met Gala is an annual event that most of us fashionistas are excited about and this year didn’t disappoint. The theme for this year’s red carpet was “In America: A lexicon of Fashion.” I am going to be brutally honest this theme was a bit underwhelming when I first heard it, because what is American fashion? Tracksuit and sweater, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with those, but they aren’t red carpet attires. But the celebrities, or at least some of them, made me eat my words with their wardrobe, and I can genuinely and humbly say that I was wrong. Come along with me and let’s see some of the tops and flops of that evening.
What is the Met Gala?
Okay, so before delving into our list, we have to explain what the Met gala is. Not all of us are aware of what it stand for and why it takes place every year. The Met Gala is the Superball or Oscars of the fashion world and at its head is Anna Wintour who decide the list of celebrities and models who are allowed to attend the Gala each year. It is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Constitute of New York City. It is considered as one of the most exclusive fundraisers globally and is the biggest one in New York City and raised a total of $13 million in 2019. You have to pay at least $30 000 to attend the Gala and the price for a table there is at least $275 000 and fashion houses and big brands usually buy this.
Top 2 best looks of the Met Gala
1. Lil Nas X
This groundbreaking artist is breaking gender norms and records with his style and clothes on every red carpet and he didn’t disappoint for this year’s Met Gala. He pulled a Lady Gaga at the 2019 Gala with his costume reveals. Nas didn’t have one, not two, but three outfits and they were all gag-worthy. His looks were bold, memorable and completely fit the theme. He entered the Gala in an ornate cape that was covered with gold beading and gave a sense of royalty, a reference to British Monarchy, then removed it to reveal a futuristic gold armor which he then took off to reveal a bodysuit that was covered in crystals and gems in the iconic design of the house of Versace.
2. Billie Eilish
You got to admit it, Gen Z ate this Met Gala, after Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish was the best dress person there, and her garment was an ode to the icon Marilyn Monroe. Rocking her new blonde hair that almost broke the internet again, Billie Eilish made sure to impress all of us and she was also one of the co-chairs of this year’s Gala alongside Amanda Gorman (poet and activist), Naomi Osaka (tennis player) and Timothée Chalamet. Eilish wore her rendition of Monroe’s icon tulle dress that the actress wore during the 1951’s Oscar. Eilish’s massive blush tulle ballgown, which was created by Oscar de la Renta, and pays homage to old Hollywood and its favorite starlet.
Top 2 worst looks of the night
1. Rihanna and A$ap Rocky
This is a two for one deal, and I mean, these clothes were the worst and am calling the fashion police because they need to go to fashion prison. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rihanna, but this was not it. How can someone who has so much money, a styling team, wear something so hideous? Rihanna attended the Gala alongside A$ap Rocky, thus confirming the rumor that they were dating, but I can’t even form words to describe how bad their outfits were. They wore ill-fitting garments that looked like comforters that didn’t even link back to this year’s gala theme. This was just a big no. But I loved the makeup and the statement of them attending together. I like the outfits from the neck-up and that says everything you need to know about them.
2. Kim Kardashian
This one is just the void; I mean literally, she who black from head to toe, even covering her face. Don’t get me wrong am not complaining that we aren’t seeing her because I feel over-saturated with the Kardashian/Jenner family but come on, this is your best dress for this Gala. And, Mrs Kim Kardashian is a repeat offender when it comes to being badly dressed at the Met Gala. Do better is all I am going to say. Yeah, it was a bold move, but did it hit the mark? No, it didn’t. At least the internet did what it does best and memed the hell out of this outfit.
